The first business operation at Hambanthota port was launched 06th of June 2012 after one and half years time after which was opened in November 2010. Due to delay and traffic in Colombo city, the government had stopped embarking vehicles from the Colombo Port and therefore, they have taken steps to embark vehicles at Hambantota Port.
The president of Sri Lanka Automobile Exporters Association in Japan Mr. Jagath Ramanayake had invited to Sri Lanka Rupavahini to have a discussion regarding the newly opened business operation in port Hambanthota. While representing SLAEAJ, he has explained how significance the SLAEAJ is and what benefits that Sri Lanka exporters can be able to achieve due to this significant change in port Hambanthota.
As a recently formed association in Japan, the SLAEAJ supports automobile exporters in Japan to discuss their matters in united way and get together to have discussions in more broaden way. This led to 2000 of people who are involving in this automobile business had a great chance to get united with help of Sri Lankan embassy in Japan.
Secondly he stated, as automobile community the appeal has been made to the president of Sri Lanka that helped to increase the permitted age limit of cars and commercial vehicles significantly. And also the radiation effect was caused after the tsunami damage in Japan, as an association had a chance to talk with Japan government to find out better solution while building up customer credibility by that critical time period.
Further he explained as exporters of Japan new port has made better solutions for all aspects. Among them, due to the congestion of Colombo port ships were parked outside the port and this led to high demurrage charges and it directly increased the cost of each vehicle. Due to availability of enough space in Hambanthota port vehicle clearance may not be time consuming. And this will help to reduce the cost of vehicle as much as possible. On the other hand insurance cost may also reduce due to reduction of loses of auto parts inside the Hambanthota port.
And also he explained if this port will be able to develop more than a harbor, like free ports in Dubai and philippines, so customers in all over the world can visit this place and they will be able to see the vehicle before buying it rather visiting in Japan. As the parking fee is low around the port this port can be able to use as vehicle assembly point and that will lead to make lot of employments.
Furthermore he stated benefits of this newly opened port may not only for this decade for long time it would be able to give benefits to the Sri Lanka economy. So he mentioned finally, it is a pleasure to give a great support for this at the very beginning.
