Mr. Tivanka Ekaratne is an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Ekaratne was called to the bar on the 8th of December, 2005 and thus have been in the active practice in original and appellate courts continuously since then. His area of specialization is Customs Law and International Trade Law. He was the receiver of the prestigious "Selvadurai Sivarasa Award" for the year 2000 and was also a member of "The Commonwealth Legal Education Conference 2001" held in Colombo.
Mr. Ekaratne is hailing from a legal background in which his father Justice Kumar Ekaratne, was a High Court Judge who completed 33 years before his retirement as a Judicial officer and grandfather Mr. S. Ekaratne, was a eminent Counsel practiced in the Balapitiya Bar.
Having successfully completed his studies at Sri Lanka Law College with first class honours pass at the Attorneys-at-Law final examination, Mr. Ekaratne commenced reading the Master's in Law (LL.M) in International Law (University of Wales) while continuing his practice and successfully completed and was awarded the LL.M in year 2009. Further Mr. Ekaratne concurrently did a Post Attorney Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and completed the same with a Merit Pass in 2008. Furthermore, Mr. Ekaratne was awarded the Advanced Certificate in International Trade Law in 2008. Furthermore Mr.Ekaratne completed the research on Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary 600 (UCP 600) which received much international recognition. Currently Mr. Ekaratne is reading for his Ph.D in the field of Customs Law.
Mr. Ekaratne published the book "Digest of Cases on Customs Law" in the year 2010 which bestowed him to become the youngest Author of a Legal publication. This publication received greater importance and thus used as a bible amongst the experts in the field of Customs Law up to date.
During Mr. Ekaratne's extensive career he travelled to many parts of the globe on Legal matters including United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, UAE, China, Singapore, Malaysia, India etc.. He has appeared both as a Counsel and as an Arbitrator and in particularly as the Co-Arbitrator in the international Cape Verde Arbitration. Mr. Ekaratne has mostly travelled as an Advisor and/or as a Consultant in International Trade Law. Furthermore locally Mr. Ekaratne has worked as an Advisor to many listed and unlisted companies, some of them being BOI approved companies and have provided opinions and strategic and value adding advisory services on diverse Commercial, Company, International Trade and Customs Law related areas.
Currently Mr. Ekaratne is working as the Senior Partner and Consultant in Ekaratne Associates.
Other than that, Mr. Ekaratne have always found time to honour the call of the Bar to participate as resource person in many law conferences and addressed seminars and presented papers by somewhat sharing the wealth of experience gained during his professional life.
Further, Mr. Ekaratne has presented papers on various subjects to different conferences and in particular has contributed by way of articles to journals in the field of Customs and Criminal Law. Mr. Ekaratne was appointed as the Chairperson of the session on Employment Law which covered "Enforcement of restraint of Trade clauses in employment contracts" and "Issues of sexual harassment at work places" at the "Colombo LawBiz 2018" the Symposium on Law and Business. Not only that Mr. Ekaratne was also a member of the panel appointed by the BASL to propose amendments to the Customs Ordinance of Sri Lanka.
Mr. Ekaratne also worked as a consultant/national coordinator to the "Planet afe infants" a project of Unicef which was funded by the government of France. This was instrumental in introducing a child friendly police procedure in Sri Lanka.
Presently, Mr.Ekaratne is the Secretary of the Colombo Law Society, which has a membership over 3500+ Lawyers and has previously held many positions. Mr. Ekaratne was appointed as the Vice President for two times and also served as the Treasurer for two consecutive years in the Colombo Law Society.
Mr. Ekaratne is a life member of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and was a Exco Member for two consecutive years.
Mr. Ekaratne is also the Assistant Secretary of the "Colombo Law Library", the oldest Library for Lawyers, in which Hon. Chief Justice is the President. Mr. Ekaratne is also sitting as the Inquirer in Disciplinary Inquiries at the Colombo Law Library.
Mr. Ekaratne had his primary and secondary education at Royal College Colombo 7, where he excelled both in Sports and studies. He is an Executive Committee Member of the Royal College Union (was elected with the highest number of votes), Executive Committee Member of the Royal College Lawyers Association and a Member of the Legal and Constitutional Amendment Committee. Mr.Ekaratne is a Honorary Life Member at Colombo Cricket Club (Gymkhana) which is the oldest Cricket Club in Sri Lanka.
